The Carpet Bag

I saw it when I got to the landing. Through the open guest room door, parked sulkily at the foot of the bed sat her old floral carpet bag. That bag sure had some stories to tell! The cracked and faded leather handle leaned over, jauntily resting on the intricately carved monkey's head clasp.

I hadn't noticed her '34 Packard (the maroon Sport Sedan) when I'd come up from the stables. She must have parked it around the back.

It was then that I heard her singing merrily in the tub. The sweet scent of oranges and vanilla wafted from the room as she called to me to come on in for a chat.
